How to Get There
In Kootenay National Park, on the road from Highway 1 to Radium, it is possible to see black bears with their babies eating dandelions in the spring, moose, elk and yes, I've even seen a grizzly once! However, it is most important to maintain that distant relationship with wildlife - PLEASE TAKE PHOTOS FROM INSIDE YOUR CAR!! For your safety and their lifestyle, please watch from a distance.
Panorama is located in the south-eastern Kootenay region of British Columbia. It is three and 1/2 hours south-west of Calgary, Alberta through both the Banff and Kootenay National Parks. This is one of the most scenic and enjoyable drives in the Rocky Mountains. The speed limit is kept at 90 km/hour (approximately 55 mph) as mountain roads can be curvy, but also to enjoy the scenery.
DIRECTIONS:
West on the Transcanada Highway (#1) from Calgary
South on Highway 93 to Radium
south on Highway 93/95 to Invermere
18 kilometres (11 miles) up and around the mountain on Toby Creek Road to Panorama
There are many interesting places to stop on your way to Panorama. The town of Banff is great for shopping for a few hours or to have lunch. It's lots of fun to walk through the town of Banff Springs, for a step back in time and a huge architectural tour!
Marble Canyon, is a wonderful natural geological formation which is just down Highway 93. Take 45 minutes to an hour to walk up the cordoned paths and look down into the depths of this narrow crevice cut out of the rocks by erosion over millions of years.
Lake Louise, is just another 22 kilometres past the Highway 93 turnoff. If you make time to see Lake Morraine, and the Chateau Lake Louise, they are both spectacular and wonderfully enjoyable.
